Peace lilies are beautiful houseplants, known for their glossy green leaves and white flowers.

Like all houseplants, they enjoy an occasional feeding, but purchasing fertilizer from the garden center can be pricey.

Instead, make a homemade banana peel recommended by an expert.

Plant expert Hannah Rowson from J.Parkers said: “To encourage flowering of your peace lily you need to maintain the light and water conditions.

“It is important to also feed your houseplants. Soaked banana peels make a fantastic homemade fertilizer, but you can use any balanced fertilizer.”

The fruit provides plenty of potassium to the soil, allowing the houseplant to thrive and grow all year round.

The plant professional added: “The general rule of thumb is to fertilize your plants once every two to three waterings in spring and summer and reduce this to once every four waterings when the growing season is over in autumn and water to give.

“However, this completely depends on the condition of your plant. If it grows fast, you can give it more plant food.”

You can soak, boil or bake banana peels to make the homemade fertilizer for your peace lily.

To soak them, cut the peels into small pieces and soak them in water for up to a week.

Stir the water occasionally to soften the peels and release the nutrients into the pot or bowl.

When you are ready to feed your houseplant, mix the banana water with five parts clean water and simply water your peace lily.

This can be repeated weekly during the flowering period, but less often during the winter months.

When watering a peace lily in the colder months of the year, make sure the top two inches of the soil are dry before continuing.

To make fertilizer by cooking, simply boil a banana peel in water for 15 minutes and then let it cool.

Once it is at room temperature, simply use it to water your houseplant.
